Review of Orbital’s Optical Delusion

Orbital are an iconic British techno outfit who burst onto the acid house scene in the late 80’s creating anthems like Belfast, Halcyon, + On + On and Chime.  In 2022 they celebrated 30 years with a reworks, remakes & remix album Thirty-Something and now follow it up with their tenth studio album Optical Delusion available in digital, CD and black and white vinyl on bandcamp.

For Optical Delusion, brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll enlisted guest vocalists for many of the tracks. “Ringa Ringa (The Old Pandemic Folk Song) is classic soaring Orbital ‘Chime’ like synths with Mediæval Bæbes on vocals.
Jason Williamson from Sleaford Mods turns “Dirty Rat” into a punked out anthem to rival Underworld’s Born Slippy.
Suite Grooves’ pick is the sublime tech-house “Day One” with trippy operatic vocals from Dina Ipavic that will please fans of their earlier work. (Words Stu Connolly)
